It's All Up To You Challenge

Updated: Dec 25, 2024

It's the last challenge of the year. I had several ideas, but in the end I opted to make a by-annie bag for my nephew's wife, Erika. She told me her favorite color was purple. I can handle purple. I decided to make the new pattern, On the Go 2.0. I have a stash of Island Batik "English Lavender" by Kathy Engle; add some IB solid batik purple and I was on my way.

  • A little sidebar note: I normally use the fabric that I receive directly from Island Batik. For this project, I am using the English Lavender yardage and By-annie pattern that I personally purchased from Cotton Candy Fabrics in Brookfield, CT.

I think the more By-annie bag patterns that you make, the better you get! That could also go for many other pattern lines too: for example, Deb Tucker and Quiltworx.

Each pattern comes with a coupon code to watch an instructional video. By-annie gives you a detailed list of what supplies are needed and how to cut your fabric and supplies. I made a copy of the little description squares and I cut them apart and separated them into groups: fusible interfacing, main fabric, lining, coordinating fabric, vinyl, strapping and Soft & Stable. Then I cut out all of the fabric and strapping pieces and then clipped the appropriate paper square to each piece. By-annie has detailed diagrams on how to cut out your pieces. The patterns are well written and thought out; written in sections with checkmark boxes next to each numbered step. Prepare components, Prepare straps and Tabs, Prepare Pockets, Assemble Flap, Assemble Zipper Loop, Assemble Body Front, Assemle Body Back and Assemble Bag were the section headings.

Next, I quilted by fabric on my Bernina 990. Just straight and diagonal lines using Schmetz needles and Aurifil.

The first task was to iron on the fusible interfacing. Then it was time to make the straps.

Let's not forget the zipper loop. You will also be sewing two magnets into the flap and the front body.

Then it's time to get all of the pockets ready. This was the first time that I worked with vinyl.

You just keep following and building on the steps as you progress through the pattern. It doesn't take long for the assembling to begin! I use Bigger Perfect Circle templates by Karen Kay Buckley to curve the corners.

After each time you assemble either the front or back piece, you sew binding on the inside seams. I hand sew the binding down. Wonder clips work great for this step!

It was coming along nicely! The zipper is open, before you sew on the second main piece, because you will have to turn the bag right side out. You need to press and steam the seams; I used my Oliso iron to do this.

Voila and you have a beautiful purple bag. I think it came out pretty great!

I can't wait to gift the purse to Erika. Now that I know she loves purple......

It's been an interesting and creative year with Island Batik. Soon 2025 will be here and we will be starting anew. Be sure to check out the other Island Batik Ambassadors and their December projects.
